Jesus' command to love our neighbor as ourselves, calls us to a life beyond mere sympathy, but to a life of empathy. Sympathy is to feel for someone else, while empathy calls us to feel with the other. As St. Paul says to the Galatians, "Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured."
Last week Matthew Works offered us a vision of what the world looks like from the eyes of a homeless person. This week, join the Rev. Chris Harris as we use Matthew’s example, as well as examples from our own lives, to examine empathy as the doorway to a discipleship that transforms ourselves and the world.
