Jesus’ command to love our neighbor as ourselves, calls us to a life beyond mere sympathy, but to a life of empathy. Sympathy is to feel for someone else, while empathy calls us to feel with the other. As St. Paul says to the Galatians, “Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured.”
Likewise today, we might practice empathy by remembering those who are homeless as though we ourselves are homeless. Join our special guest, Matthew Works, an artist, advocate, and activist, who also happens to be homeless, as he shares his story, his art and his wisdom, helping us all to enter into a deeper practice of empathy.
