St. Bart's Sunday School - Sunday, January 29

Sunday School this Sunday will be filled with FUN, FELLOWSHIP, and a great LESSON. We have some really neat things planned. Be there at 9:30 with your offering and be ready to have a FANTASTIC morning with your Sunday School Friends.

More about Maria — Through the Sunday School's weekly offerings we are able to sponsor Maria (St. Bart's World Vision Sponsor child) who lives in the mountains of Ecuador. She is almost 10 now, has a pet called Chiripa and her best friend is Daniela. Your money helps provide Maria with medical checkups, helps with her math (which she struggles with) and allows her to be taught good values.

Thanks to all of you who brought your offering this week. It makes such a difference in how much we can support our World Vision Sponsor Child from Ecuador, Maria. Every penny/quarter/dollar counts!

Don't forget to check out our website: www.stbartssundayschool.org every now and then for updates on the Sunday School program.

Penny Ribnik's Ministry for Casa
Volunteer as a Court Appointed Special Advocate

I started my training as a CASA last February and became the advocate for a young girl in March. I knew that she had had a tough time when I went to read her court file and found that she had four binders full of court documents and she was only 10 years old!

She had been taken away from her mother and returned to her three times. She had been in six or seven placements, including foster homes and group homes, not including the Polinsky Center and other temporary placements, while her social worker looked for a more permanent home for her. I visit with her every two weeks. I spent the first couple of visits at her foster home, getting to know her and her family. Now we go and find adventures--the zoo, feeding the ducks, meeting Santa Claus, going to the aquarium.

I hold educational rights for her which means that I act as her guardian with respect to educational issues. I have attended her school conference with her foster mom, her I.E.P. meeting with her special education team, and my first court hearing on her behalf. I advocated for a medical screening that had been recommended but overlooked in the transition between old and new doctors, social workers, and foster parents. The CASA is often the one supportive constant in the child's life. She is a great kid, but she has a lot to overcome. I am planning to be with her through her long journey through the foster care system and out into the world. If, God forbid, she has to leave the good foster home she is in, I will still be with her.

At my child's parent-teacher conference, the teacher showed me a sample of her writing. The topic was "One of My Favorite Memories". She wrote about our trip to the zoo saying, "My friend, Penny, took me."

I hope that you will consider becoming a CASA and helping a foster child build new memories.

Next Information meeting on January 28 from 10:00 - 11:30 am at the Bonita-Sunnyside Branch Library 4375 Bonita Road, Bonita, CA 91902. Visit www.speakupnow.org or call 858-598-2235.

Operation Diaper Drop Begins

St. Bart's is joining other Episcopal churches this month in collecting diapers and "pull-ups" of all sizes to help struggling families served by Episcopal Community Services. Please "drop" your donations in the boxes in the narthex of the church between January 15 and 29 or at the Sunday Night Family Supper on January 15 (see above event). This is a great diocesan-wide collaborative outreach project to support. If you receive the Sunday paper or coupon inserts, be sure to look for some diaper coupons. If you're not going to use them, bring them to St. Bart's to share with others. For more information, please contact: Jill Henderson jfh@cox.net.
