We are nearing Christmas, the time of surprises! Godly Play tells us that the cow was surprised to find a baby in her breakfast box. Mary and Joseph were surprised by the cast of characters who appeared to see the newborn. The Magi were surprised to finally find their sought-for king, but then to be told to go home another way.
Last Sunday, it was a joy to go caroling in Seven Oaks with 15 children, youth, and parents from St. Bart’s. In one home, we sang “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” As we went through the verses, I thought, Could I be hearing this right? Isn’t it “five golden rings”? No—we sang “five onion rings”! This surprise still makes me smile.
Do you wonder where the onion rings are in your life? Remember that Mary, Joseph, the angels, the shepherds, and the Magi were all on the move. Come to church, and if you can’t, invite church to come to you. Reach out and be connected. You are loved, and your brothers and sisters in Christ want to be a part of God’s grace in your life. Invite an onion ring—or five—into your world, and be surprised by the delight that ensues.
