God Look Back at Us

In Dinka, “God Look Back at Us” is “Jol Wo Lieec.” It is the name of a young adult ministry founded over 30 years ago by Bishop Nathaniel Garang Anyieth of South Sudan. The goal is to strengthen young adults in discipleship and fellowship as they face the challenges of life. The Jol Wo Lieec ministry has expanded around the world as the South Sudanese diaspora has spread globally.

Bishop Nathaniel died last month at the age of 85. But on the eve of his death, he received the message that Jol Wo Lieec will have its first US gathering this month. Our own Father Isaiah is one of the main organizers of this gathering at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church this weekend. He is so excited! We are also playing a part, as some donors from St. Bart’s have helped underwrite the T-shirts and lodging for these young adults.

The photo above shows some new members of Jol Wo Lieec, which includes Father Colin of St. Luke’s and six others. Members of the group are coming to St. Bart’s this Sunday! Their legal advisor, John Abit, will lead the Adult Forum at 9 a.m. And at the 10 a.m. Eucharist, Jol Wo Lieec will begin our service with a short dance performance.

Ours is a congregational faith. We are called to walk with one another. What a joy it is to watch God’s movements in this young adult diaspora gathering here from across the country. May each be a blessing to the others, and to us as we witness with them.

Blessings,

Mother Nina+
