Homework Assignment for This Weekend

A renewal of vows is a celebration of a union and a re-commitment to each other. This is also true of our union with Christ! This weekend we will celebrate the Baptism of Our Lord, when the full identity of the grown-up Christ Child is revealed, by renewing our own baptismal covenant.

I make a request of those preparing for baptism, or the parents and godparents if they are speaking for a child: Have something specific in mind when you say “I will, with God’s help.” I suggest the same for all of you, every time you renew your vows. Identifying these specifics is your homework before coming to church this weekend!

For example, when asked:

Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?

As you answer, hold in your heart how you will act to continue these practices.

Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?

As you answer, hold in your heart an evil that tempts you and how you will turn to Christ.

Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?

As you answer, hold in your heart a vision of how you can be a living proclamation of Christ in our world.

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?

As you answer, hold in your heart a person or group of people.

Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?

As you answer, hold in your heart how you will change to be more respectful of human dignity.

These vows are your resolutions to God. As with any resolution, be specific and detailed with yourself. Know that all these intentions you hold in your heart will be heard by God, who will help you live up to them as you carry them into your world. See you on Saturday or Sunday!
