Situational vs. Chronic

Earlier this month, I attended a training for the Interfaith Shelter Network (ISN) operating here in San Diego. Some of you may remember that St. Bart’s has partnered with ISN in the past, using our buildings as a short-term shelter for those who are “situationally homeless.”
We are all familiar with chronic homelessness because we commonly see these people living outside. But situational homelessness is completely different and is often hidden. Many of those in this type of need often have never been homeless before. They may be without a home due to a lost job, an injury, a fire, or a marital breakup—when we hear their stories, it is easy to imagine “there but for the grace of God go I”—and they need immediate help.
On February 1-15, St. Bart’s will once again host a short-term shelter for some number of situationally homeless households. While we will be the hosts, we won’t do it alone. We will partner with Trinity Episcopal Church in Escondido, along with our Temple neighbors on both sides. Together, we will ensure that these guests have breakfast, a bag lunch, dinner, and a safe place to shower and sleep.
As the time draws closer, we will be asking for volunteers to serve this ministry. But for now, please save the dates on your calendar. It will be good to be returning to a former ministry here at St. Bart’s!
