“Thank You for Doing This”

Last Sunday, I was invited by the rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Middleburg, Virginia, to preach and concelebrate at the baptism of our one-year-old grandson. Jamie was a big ham and had the church in stitches. It was a beautiful morning!
As the parishioners of this 18th-century church were walking out after the service, I greeted them. One woman looked me right in the eyes and, with a serious expression, said something very curious: “Thank you for doing this.” I thought,Well, that’s never happened before.
As she talked more, I realized she wasn’t speaking to me as a priest, but as the matriarch of my family. The person who ensures that the light of Christ continues to be central in the life of future generations of my family. Her comment made me see my role as a priest even more deeply. It also made me think about us at St. Bart’s.
We are all called to ensure that the light of Christ continues to be central in the lives of future generations here at St. Bart’s. It’s a role that applies not just in our personal families but also in our church family. In fact, that’s what church family is all about! So, in this “season of invitation,” remember our children. Engage in “God talk,” help with their activities, compliment their service, and invite families you know to church. Being matriarchs and patriarchs is one very important way that we can “be the church”!
